Now it’s officially nostalgic and chaotic!

What do a flying car, a transformable truck and a bad-tempered supervillain have in common? That's right: they're all coming back! Thanks to The Loyal Subjects and their big *SDCC Exclusive* unveiling marathon on June 24, fans of M.A.S.K. can put on their vintage glasses - or rather, their masks! The whole thing was accidentally leaked online back in March (oops!), but now comes the official moment of glory with lots of smoke, mirrors and social media hype à la #MASKMondays. The packaging looks so cool that even Matt Trakker would take a selfie in front of it - if he didn't have to stop Miles Mayhem from taking over the world.
As many of you probably already know, Lance Anderson and Gordon were friends, so Lance is particularly close to our hearts. So it's no wonder we were particularly keen on the boxes. What would Hasbro and The Loyal Subjects conjure up from the legacy? Would they bring the hot shit, sharp like Bruce's sayings, or something more lukewarm like Cliff's IQ? Now we know - and so do you!

But wait - RHINO is now MDU?! SWITCHBLADE is called Heigh Tech Helicopter?

Yes, apparently "RHINO" and "SWITCHBLADE" have currently disappeared into the legal Bermuda Triangle. So let's just call it "Mobile Defense Unit" and "High Tech Helicopter" - sounds almost as cool as a 90s cable channel.

Each figure comes with two masks: a short version for everyday life (shopping, jogging, saving the world), and a long version with an effect - perfect for epic battles or when you want to cut in line at the supermarket.

Some images are digital renderings - which means they still look like something out of a futuristic advertising catalog. The real figures could be a little less shiny, but hey - we're talking 80s tech magic here!

But seriously, let's take a closer look at the boxes. Where are they identical to the originals, and where are the differences?

Most noticeably, and we LOVE this, the original artwork from the 80 boxes has been used. But let's look at this in detail
What do we see on all the boxes:
•the design of the 80's USA boxes (which were also used in all countries outside of Europe) •the original artwork of the 80s by Lance Anderson
•the KENNER logo (how cool is that please? The most beautiful detail of the box, beside the artwork)
•the original US logo of the 80s, with fire and rocket (in the 80s it was partially defused in Europe and had no fire or the rocket)
•the layout of the teaser images is based on the original USA boxes
•figure with 2 masks
•an age rating of 8+ (in the 80s you only had to be 3 years old, what's different about kids today?)
•currently no reference to a comic and/or poster(what's coming?)

So where are the differences between then and now?

Let's take a look at all the boxes in detail

The first thing you notice is that THUNDERHAWK has been given the artwork of the European box. The main differences to the US version are as follows:

•The artwork of the US box has the stickers of THUNDERHAWK based on the cartoon, the one of the EU box is Toy-Correct
•The artwork of the EU box has no fire or weapons or bombs to see
•The chrome on the EU box looks like chrome
•The angle of THUNDERHAWK is drawn differently
•THUNDERHAWK is smaller in the artwork on the EU box

We'll have to find out why the weapons-defused EU version was used here.

In opposite to THUNDERHAWK, RHINO has been given the original US artwork, which of course fits perfectly with the new Hasbro box, which has the overall USA design of the 80s boxes.

In opposite to THUNDERHAWK, CONDOR got the original US artwork, which of course fits perfectly to the new Hasbro box, which has the overall USA design of the 80s boxes.

In opposite to THUNDERHAWK, SWITCHBLADE has the original US artwork, which of course fits perfectly to the new Hasbro box, which has the overall USA design of the 80s boxes. The artwork of the Switchblade box is unique to all MASK Toy Boxes. It was a very early stage of the design. The pilot is hard to recognize as Miles Mayhem, and the proportions of Switchblade don't perfectly match those of the toy or the cartoon. I would have liked Hasbro to use the Eu artwork here, which was completely redone at the time. See the comparison here
